India: Jaswant expelled from BJP for ‘eulogizing’ Jinnah and ‘denigrating’ Patel
India’s main opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday axed one of its senior leaders, Jaswant Singh, who is also a close aide of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for writing the biography of Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah, ‘Jinnah – India-Partition-Independence’ and then going to the town that he had been inspired by the ‘self-made’ leader of Muslim League.
Four years back, in June 2005, L K Advani, the chief architect of BJP was forced to resign as party chief for his hailing Jinnah as a secular leader during a weeklong trip to Pakistan. Like Jaswant now, Advani then noted that Jinnah, in his speech to the Constituent Assembly of undivided India on Aug. 11, 1947, had favored a secular, non-theocratic state and was of the view there should be no difference between Hindu and Muslims, as all were its citizens.
United States Contributing $6 Million to Support Demining in Northern Sri Lanka
The U.S. Government is contributing an additional $6 million for demining activities in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province to help people displaced by the conflict return to their homes as quickly as possible.
This funding, through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political and Military Affairs Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (State/PMWRA), was granted to four non-governmental organizations (NGOs) currently working on demining activities in Sri Lanka. This additional funding is allowing the demining NGOs to increase their demining capacity and expand their work over the next twelve months. The demining process includes initial assessments of the land where mines may have been planted, technical surveys of minefields, clearing of mines and the destruction of unexploded ordinance.
DDG (Danish De-Mining Group), FSD (Swiss Foundation for Mine Action), Halo Trust and MAG (Mines Advisory Group) are sharing the award and using the funds to hire additional staff for survey teams and demining teams and to purchase new equipment to remove the mines.
“The U.S. Government is pleased to provide this funding and assist with demining in northern Sri Lanka,” stated James R. Moore, U.S. Charge d’Affaires. “Demining is a critical step in the process so that people can return to their homes, and we support the Government of Sri Lanka’s commitment to return all those displaced quickly and safely,” he continued.
In addition to this new funding, the Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) team, a group of U.S. military and civilian demining experts from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, U.S. Pacific Command, Special Operations Command Pacific, and U.S. Army Pacific visited Sri Lanka on June 22-26.
The team met with a number of Sri Lankan government officials, members of the Sri Lankan military and representatives from nongovernmental organizations involved with demining to identify how the United States can best assist the Sri Lankan military in its humanitarian demining efforts in northern Sri Lanka. The U.S. military, through U.S. Pacific Command, will provide equipment and training to the Sri Lanka Army for humanitarian demining in the Northern Province.
The U.S. Government has provided more than $68 million for humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka in 2008 and 2009, including more than $42 million in emergency food aid and more than $11 million in emergency non-food relief. Most of this assistance has been directed to serve Sri Lankans displaced by the conflict in the North.

UPFA rules out deputy mayoral post for ACMC
The ruling UPFA yesterday ruled out the possibility of appointing someone from the All Ceylon Muslim Congress (ACMC) as the deputy mayor of the Jaffna Municipal Council saying no such agreement had been struck between the two parties before the election.
After the election, the ACMC, led by Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rizath Bathiudeen, requested the government to appoint one of their members as the deputy mayor of Jaffna. The ACMC which contested the election for the Jaffna municipality on the UPFA ticket won four seats. The EPDP which also contested the election under the same symbol got nine seats. Subsequently, the party recommended Mrs. Yogeswari Patkunarajah for the mayoral post and Thurairajah Ilango for the deputy mayoral post.
Asked for his comments in this regard, UPFA Secretary, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the government’s policy was to give prominence to candidates who topped the preferential voter list when making such appointments. Accordingly, the Minister said that the Tamil candidates representing the EPDP would have a better chance of getting these two posts. “EPDP leader Minister Douglas Devananda is to arrive here in Colombo soon. Then, we will make these appointments in consultation with him. The ACMC had not made such a request prior to the election,” he said.
Commenting on the forthcoming Southern Provincial Council, he said that the nomination lists would be finalized by next week. The SLFP candidates have already been identified for the election, while other parties of the ruling UPFA are yet to nominate their candidates for the election. Former Southern Province DIG D.W. Prathapasinghe and film star Anarkali Akarsha are also expected to contest Under the UPFA’s betel leaf symbol.
The Election Commissioner’s Department will accept nominations for the election from August 21 and the last day for nominations is Aug 28.

Ramadan starts August 21 in Europe: ECFR
CAIRO — The holy fasting month of Ramadan will start in Europe on Friday, August 21, according to astronomical calculations, the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) has announced.
“The moon of Ramadan will be born on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 10:02:35 GMT (1:02:35 pm Makkah time),” the Dublin-based council said in an Arabic statement obtained by IslamOnline.net Saturday, August 15.
“Thus Friday, August 21, will be the first day of Ramadan inshallah.”
Turkey and all Balkan countries have already announced that the dawn-to-dusk fasting month will start on Friday, according to astronomical calculations.
The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) said that Ramadan would begin on Saturday, August 22, in North America.
In Ramadan, adult Muslims, save the sick and those traveling, abstain from food, drink, smoking and sex between dawn and sunset.
Muslims dedicate their time during the holy month to become closer to Allah through prayer, self-restraint and good deeds.
It is customary for Muslims to spend part of the days during Ramadan studying the Noble Qur’an.
Many men perform i`tikaf (spiritual retreat), spending the last 10 days of the month exclusively in the mosque.
* Unity
The ECFR urged Muslims worldwide to adopt astronomical calculations in defining the start of the holy fasting month.
“Astronomy is a modern science that reached a great level of accuracy in determining the start and end of lunar months.
“So we urge European Muslims to adopt it in determining the start of lunar months, particularly Ramadan and Shawwal, to help people do their religious duties.
“We also ask mosque officials and scholars in all Muslim countries to respect the clear-cut results of the astronomical calculations to help unify Muslims worldwide.”
The first day of Ramadan and moon sighting have always been a controversial issue among Muslim countries, and even scholars seem at odds over the issue.
While one group of scholars sees that Muslims in other regions and countries are to follow the same moon sighting as long as these countries share one part of the night, another states that Muslims everywhere should abide by the lunar calendar of Saudi Arabia.
A third, however, disputes both views, arguing that the authority in charge of ascertaining the sighting of the moon in a given country announces the sighting of the new moon, then Muslims in the country should all abide by this.
This usually causes confusion among Muslims, particularly in the West, on observing the dawn-to-dusk fasting and celebrating the `Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of fasting.

The Colombo Muslims – the silent minority
by Shyamalee Mahibalan Murugesu
During my recent visit to the island I stumbled upon ‘Nobody’s People’ a book by Latheef Farook that gave an excellent view into the Muslims of north and east. The book prompted me to research on the plight of the Colombo Muslims which I feel is a façade created into thinking that they are a rich business community.
The Colombo Central densely populated, highly congested predominantly Muslim areas of Maligawatte, Aluthkade, Maradana, Grandpass, Modera, Central Road,Bloemendhal Road are a huge voter base used by every political party of all hues to their whims during elections time.
Maligawatte, a marshland was transformed by the then president R Premadasainto a township of apartments and shop houses, recreational facility and a movie theatre. Over the years with the changes of ruling parties in typical Sri Lankan fashion, previous projects were ignored. So Maligawatte, like President Premadasa’s many clock towers stopped with time. It failed to provide education, employment opportunities to the youth; instead what it gave drugs, alcohol, and porn (the Ruby Theatre rolls out enough that the likes not seen in Las Vegas). It became a breeding ground for violence supported and created by politicians. Most dreaded of all places is Applewatte, the Mumbai of Sri Lanka, a haven of contract killers and mobsters. There are reported to be many Jamal’s and Saleem’s with big dreams with less or no opportunities to progress in life thus have become easy targets for politicians.
My quest led me to Rauff Zain a university student who is also an editor of the book ‘Abnormal behavior of Muslim youth’ which was sponsored by the world assembly of Muslim youth(WAMY). Written in Tamil the book sheds a light on the life of Colombo’s Muslim youth.
Prior to 1970 education in the Muslim community was given less preference or scant regard and the most educated Muslims were considered to be the Jaffna Muslims. For the rest, other than a few affluent classes, it was family business. After the 70’s, despite its image of wealthy business, the income of Colombo Muslim householders are relatively less and are under urban poverty. Most of the families are engaged in informal wage work or in self employment. So the image of wealth itself is a façade.
Considering the 21 Muslim schools in Colombo including Zahira and Muslim Ladies the progress is reported to be alarming. The research specifies the following issues as a huge contributor. Lack of permanent teachers, lack of resources, drop outs and students with ODD (Oppositional defiant Disorder) Many Muslim youth in Colombo are reported to be reflecting this behavior.
A further survey carried out by the CMC has identified that a total of 77,612 families are currently living in 1614 low income settlements in the city. And 90% of these slum settlements are in the predominant Muslim areas of Central Colombo.
Specifically, residents in the areas Maligawatte, as Rauff Zain pointed out, the houses are so congested that they take turns to sleep alternatively. Usually it’s the youth who sleep outside. So the youth in these areas reflect the social and psychological factors that have influenced their lives. In 2008 police reported to have arrested 10278, mostly Muslim youth for possession of heroin and the type of heroin that’s popular among the youth of Colombo Central is known as no 3 which originates from south west Asia. According to police narcotics bureau it is mostly Muslim businessmen who have been smuggling drugs in to the country. The latest fad among Muslim teenagers is reported to be MAWA, a beeda type of a drug which is a craze among school teenagers. According to reports the Muslim underworld gangs are reported to be operating from the areas of Applewatte and other Colombo central areas bringing the total number of gangs operating in Colombo to 54. According to Rauff Zain’s research the main causes of criminal activities among the youth are urban poverty, illiteracy, political discrimination and political pressure, childhood experience, social segregation, and lack of moral/cultural based education. Many gang members display ODD (oppositional defiant disorder)
Living in such extreme poverty with less hope or no hopes at all, hidden by the rest of the world these young people are easy prey for violence. The Colombo Muslims are lagging way behind in education and only education without political interference can enrich and transform their lives. It has also been established that this youth suffer from anti social behavior and it is vital that the society does not isolate and segregate these youth, instead there should be a mechanism in place to reach out and rehabilitate.
It is interesting to note that the local media is suddenly buzzing with jihad groups and sectarian violence in the Muslim community. This had outraged many since every Muslim knows that he or she has a personal jihad not the one fought with weapons.
It is paramount to understand that the modern Jihad movements in the world are the work of social disparity in a society and nothing religious about them.
Specifically in Sri Lanka it was politics that separated people not their beliefs. It was Blue, Red and Green that divided people, not ideologies. It was the politicians like the British who divided the people to rule. It seems Sri Lankans have become way too passionate about politics that the people cannot build a country beyond political ideology.
It is interesting to reflect on the history of a country that once idealized Sri Lanka. As Singapore celebrates its 44th national day this week all Singaporeans will recite their national pledge. ” we, the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people, regardless of race, language or religion, to build a democratic society based on justice and equality so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation” in English, Malay, and Tamil. This was one country that was built beyond politics and political interference. If Sri Lanka is to become another Singapore, it has to erase political ideologies and free its citizens from the bondage of politics and provide equal opportunity to all its citizens. Let the youth have dreams irrespective of race and religion since disparity and repression are a breeding ground for violence.
