Committee to resolve Vaharai land dispute between Tamils & Muslims

The government has appointed a special committee to resolve a long standing dispute between Tamils and Muslims in Vakarai, Batticaloa district over around 1000 acres of paddy lands. The committee will be headed by Disaster Relief Services Minister M.S.S. Ameer Ali and Eastern Provincial Council Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, and will consists 14 members. This issue has been stumbling block for reconciliation between the two communities for long time.
The chief minister and the minister both are from Batticaloa district will co-chair this committe meetings. “Prominent political leaders from the two communities co-chairing this important committee on a sensitive issue like this is healthy sign for amicable and durable solution of the dispute”, commented a conflict resolution expert. Farmers from the two communities have problem in cultivating this thousand acres of paddy field due to this long dispute, this has resulted the decrease of the paddy product also in the past.
